P. Knowlesi is the fifth malarial parasite known to infect humans, originally known to cause simian malaria, thus making it a zoonotic infection. P.knowlesi has entered the human population in Southeast Asia. Specifically people who spend time the sylvan woods and forests are at risk. (M.A Ahmed et al, 2015)
P.knowlesi is a highly pathogenic malaria parasite in humans. The parasite has a low pyrogenic threshold (i.e. a low number of parasites required to cause or induce fever) and a risk of severe disease (Bridget E. Baber. et al, 2017).
